'Do not be
afraid...for thus says the Lord: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug
of oil will not fail.'
1 Kings
17.13-14
Two poignant stories about widows
are included in this coming Sunday's readings from Scripture. Both widows
are at the extremes of life: poverty and death. In this sense, they are
reminders of what life is like for hundreds of millions of people in our own
time.
We read these stories as a call to
trust in God's provision--even in extreme circumstances. They also remind
us that we who have so much are called by God to give and share with those who
have so little.
Remembering God's love leads to
deeper trust; and trust moves us to the kind of sharing for which Jesus praised
the widow and her offering, the famous 'mite'.
SUNDAY
SURPRISE: This coming Sunday, Nov. 12, we
will recognize and honor veterans. During our worship, we have quite an
interesting surprise for all of you! Curious? Come and
see!! ...Veterans, please wear your uniforms if they still
fit! If not, that's OK, too!! We want to thank and honor you
regardless.
TURKEYS WITH A
CAUSE: Our three turkey-nominees, Ralph Anderson,
Bruce Kepford, and Tim Shearer, are seeking your financial support for
food boxes that Redeemer will be giving out again this Christmas. Already
given? Give again! It all goes toward a wonderful cause.
FINISHING THE 2ND
FLOOR: We're in the process of working towards some
funding grants that will enable us to finish the unused 2nd floor of the new
addition. Under the guidance of Rex Porter, we hope to shape a ministry
plan that will help us in our desire to connect more closely with our community
in the use of the 2nd floor. If you have some ideas for that ministry
plan, we welcome your suggestions and urge you to share them with Paul Schutz,
Pastor Joel, Al Binder, and our church Council.
TAMALES,
TAMALES!! Here's a wonderful opportunity to help support
Lutheran Latino Ministries and buy some tasty tamales at the same time.
Order forms and information are available on the Ushers Table at
church. Deadline for orders including payment is Nov 25. A
dozen home-made tamales made by the Latino women from Trinity Lutheran, Mt
Angel, for only $15! Who wouldn't want a dozen or two?
THANKSGIVING
WORSHIP will be offered on the day before
Thanksgiving--Wednesday, Nov. 22, at
12noon and 7pm. The noon service will be especially
good for those who do not want to drive at night, and the 7pm service will be
especially good for those who work. This will be a service of praise and
celebration for God's goodness, with wonderful Bible readings and songs and
hymns. Join us!
