Subject: Lenten reminders from Pastor Joel

I'm sending a quick reminder to all of you a day earlier than my usual edition of Midweek Reminders.  The reason is that tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, and I want to make sure that you are aware of the special worship opportunities available for you.

ASH WEDNESDAY WORSHIP, FEBRUARY 21
  • 12 noon, followed by a potluck lunch to which you are also invited
  • 7pm
~ Both services will include hallmarks of Ash Wednesday worship: Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion.

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE FEED, FEBRUARY 20
That's tonight at 6pm.  We'll have our own 'Fat Tuesday' (Mardi Gras in French) with piles of steaming pancakes and various toppings for you to enjoy, along with beverages.

Fat was one of the things people in past centuries traditionally gave up during the season of Lent.  That meant all the fat in the house needed to be used up prior to Ash Wednesday.  Pancakes (or some local variation thereof) were a quick and inexpensive way to do that.

We hope you and your family will want to observe the beginning of Lent with your fellow believers here at Redeemer.  Together we follow the Lord, Jesus Christ, to his Cross and Resurrection.
