'We took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi...'  Acts 16.11-12

Paul and his companions follow a vision given by the Holy Spirit, to cross from Asia into Europe with the gospel.  Samothrace, a Greek island between Asia and Greece, is also the place where one of the most famous statues from classical antiquity was found: the "Winged Victory (Greek: Nike) of Samothrace," now in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

In Acts, the word 'victory' takes on a different meaning than it had for ancient Greeks, as Paul and his companions make their first European convert to Christ, a woman named Lydia.  In one respect, we (as descendants of European immigrants to N. America) are all Lydia's children.  The Holy Spirit is still giving the church a vision of people, near and distant, to be won for Christ.

BIBLE STUDY ON PHILIPPIANS:  My discussion class on Paul's letter to the Philippians continues each Sunday morning in the Commons Room, from 8:50 - 9:45am.  Grab a cup of coffee from the kitchen and join us!

BAKE SALE THIS SUNDAY:  On May 13, we'll have the opportunity to purchase yummy baked goods as a way of supporting our youth summer mission trip to Canada.  If you can provide goodies for sale, please contact Debi Williams.  Be sure to worship and then scan the table for something sweet to take home!

LOVE IN ACTION:  Thank you to those who are helping provide care and companionship for Janis Petersen!  Janis is doing well, praise God, and progressing towards full recovery step by step.

Eileen Patton is also doing much better, but continues to be confined to her bed at home as her broken ribs and vertebrae heal.

Virginia Hopkins is making good progress in her initial recovery from bypass surgery.  She is scheduled to be released from Salem Hospital on Tuesday, and will continue her rehab and therapy at a yet-to-be-named rehabilitation center in Salem.  We'll keep you updated.
