The Northwest Delegation to the 63rd Convention of the LCMS started its first full day of meeting with an early breakfast with Synod 1st Vice-President Bill Diekelman as its guest speaker. In a day that was marked by some posturing and wrangling over issues such as the Convention’s standing rules, floor nominations and the disposition of the three Omnibus resolutions brought by the floor committees, the convention re-elected the Rev. Dr. Gerald Kieschnick as Synod President on the first ballot and the Rev. Dr. William Diekelman as 1st Vice-President on the third ballot. Also elected today were: the Rev. Dr. Paul L. Maier as 2nd Vice-President, the Rev. John Wohlrabe, Jr. as 3rd Vice-President, the Rev. Dr. Dean Nadasdy as 4th Vice-President, and the Rev. Dr. David Buegler as 5th Vice-President. President Kieschnick issued some pointed challenges to the delegates about keeping in mind the theme of the convention--One Message - Christ is Here for You--as central to the decisions they are making and to the future activity of the church at large.

The convention also heard the first of a number of Ablaze! updates which will be shared throughout the week. These updates included the story of a young woman from Portland, Oregon, who shared her story about the challenge of leaving the traditions of her family of origin for her faith in Jesus Christ. As she shared about her sister and her brother-in-law coming to faith and being baptized, the work of the Holy Spirit was evident as the spark of faith was fanned into flame in and through her life.

Three years ago at the 2004 convention, I was struck by how our Lord continues to work through us often in spite of the issues we have with each other. It’s truly an amazing thing to hear the stories of how this large body of people with different opinions of what it means to live and be the church still witness the work of God in their lives and in the lives of the people they love. That work of the Holy Spirit in imperfect beings, along with the solid spiritual leaders God has given us, is a real reason to give thanks and to have that certain hope in what the Lord can and will do.

Tomorrow’s agenda includes more important elections – notably, for the Secretary of the Synod, the Synod’s Board of Directors, members of various commissions and boards, and regents for the Synod’s universities and seminaries. The agenda also calls for the convention to consider some significant resolutions from various floor committees.

Lord of the Church, Thank You for our leaders – President Kieschnick, Vice-Presidents Diekelman, Maier, Wohlrabe, Nadasdy, and Buegler. They are Your instruments for growth for us and for our church. Bless them, we pray, with Your Holy Spirit, that their thoughts and actions might reflect Your will for us and that they might model our Savior’s love in the way they help us to be the people You have called us to be. Strengthen the delegates with energy and resolve as they continue to serve You in this most important task at the Convention. Let all that we do be pleasing to You and a gift to Your people. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

Please continue to remember the delegates and all our leaders today in your prayers.
