Pastor's Mid-week reminders
‘The holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever.’ Daniel 7.18
All Saints Sunday is this coming Sunday. We cringe at being called ‘saints’, because we know that we are more unholy than holy. But as we were reminded on Reformation Sunday a few days ago, our standing with God has nothing to do with how good we behave. It has everything to do with Jesus Christ. And because of his sinless life, death, and resurrection, we are sanctified—made holy—purely by his grace.
ALL SAINTS WORSHIP: So, you holy ones of God here at Redeemer, plan to be with your fellow saints on Sunday for an uplifting vision of how we are, together, the ‘communion of saints’, whether in heaven or on earth, bound together in Christ. The Elders will lead worship, and Bob Kosta, our newly licensed deacon, will be preaching.
OUT OF TOWN: Diane and I will be in Chicago from this Friday, November 2, through next Tuesday, Nov. 6. If you have any urgent need for pastoral care, please call the office or call one of our Elders directly: Fred Gargiulo, Lloyd Bauer, Glenn Edwards, Rick Crawford, Bob Kosta.
TIME CHANGE: Remember to turn your watches and clocks BACK one hour on Saturday evening when you go to bed, as we transition from Daylight Savings Time back to Standard Time.
ADULT CLASS: Bob Kosta will be pinch-hitting for me this Sunday, so we’ll take a break from ‘Jesus and the Gospels’. Bob will lead the group in a discussion of the Bible readings for All Saints Sunday.
CHILI DONATIONS: Thank you all for your generous donations of canned chili for Marion Polk Food Share’s “Make a Difference Day.” The requests for food from poor families in our area keep skyrocketing, and without the generous help from congregations like Redeemer, MPFS would have a difficult time meeting the needs.
OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE AND LEARN
- Habitat for Humanity: This coming Saturday, Nov. 3, Redeemer has been asked to provide laborers from 8am to 12 noon. Please see the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board, or call Joy Anderson, for details. If you cannot help Saturday, our next date is December 1.
- Soup Kitchen: This coming Sunday, Nov. 4, we are looking for volunteers to help serve a soup lunch at Jason Lee Methodist Church to the homeless.
- Open House on Marion Polk Food Share: Tuesday, November 6, from 10am – 6pm. Familiar face to look for—Nancy Hadley, who works there.
DATES TO NOTE
- Nov. 11: We honor Veterans during our worship. Vets, if you can still fit into your uniforms, we invite you to wear them.
- Nov. 18: World Relief Sunday. A door offering will be taken for helping Lutheran World Relief with disaster assistance, including the devastating fires in S. California recently. Also, remember that all proceeds from our newspaper recycling box in the parking lot go towards Lutheran World Relief—so keep stuffing that box with your newspapers!
- Nov. 21: On this day before Thanksgiving Day, we invite you to worship at 12 noon, followed by a buffet lunch provided by our Over Fifty Folks.
RECYCLING HELP: Jan Shearer, our Master Recycler, provides the church with a copy of Waste Matters, a publication of Marion County. You can also find this inserted in the Statesman Journal. It is full of great information on how to reduce, recycle, and reuse stuff we might throw into the garbage. Of special interest in the current issue is recycling batteries—not car, but the little ones we use in clocks, etc. Please read and follow through.
GIFT WRAPPING for your Christmas gifts is available from volunteers with Habitat for Humanity this December. Please see the announcement in our Sunday worship bulletin, or contact Lorene Bartell for information. A worthy way to support an important service organization that provides low-income families with their own homes.
