Midweek Reminders from Pastor Joel

‘Those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.’ The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water.’ St John 4.14-15

Water. That’s the great image for this coming Sunday. The most essential thing to life is water. Without it we die quickly. Jesus promises a never-ending source of water that nourishes our spirits and offers us the gift of eternal life. In this thirsty world, our call as Christians is to offer water to people—both the water that gives physical life and sustenance, and also the spiritual water of Jesus.

NEW MEMBERS! On Sunday we welcome Earl and Verna Dixon into membership here at Redeemer! We rejoice that God has brought them to our fellowship, and we hope that you will quickly make friends with them. Following worship (and our very brief Congregational Meeting), we invite you to stay for a reception in their honor. Introduce yourselves, get acquainted, give them a warm Redeemer welcome!

MIDWEEK LENTEN VESPERS continue on Wednesday evening, at 7pm, preceded by our Soup and Bread Suppers at 6pm. A great combination! Come for good food and fellowship, remain for worship as we sing the beautiful Holden Evening Prayer. My preaching theme for these services is “Windows On The Cross: Stories of Love and Sacrifice”. Join us!

EASTER SUNDAY comes very early this year—March 23. Because the beginning of Daylight Savings Time has been moved up by Congress (March 9 this year), our Sunrise Service on Easter will begin at 7:30am rather than the 7am time we’ve grown accustomed to in the past. A full Easter breakfast will be served by our Youth at 8:30am, and our late worship will be at the normal time of 10am.

YOUTH EASTER FUNDRAISER: The Easter breakfast is a major fundraiser for our youth, and will help finance their mission trip to north Idaho this summer. Please come, eat heartily, and give generously.

‘JESUS AND THE GOSPELS’ is the title of the current class I’m running on Sunday mornings. On this coming Sunday, we view the final lecture on the gospel of St John. Then we move on to all the ancient so-called ‘gospels’ that never made it into the Bible—gospel of Thomas, gospel of Peter, Gnostic gospels, etc. Our reliable video guide, Prof. Luke Timothy Johnson, illuminates how the gospels each offer their own perspectives on the central figure of Christianity, Jesus. We begin at 8:50am. Join us!

2ND FLOOR GRANT APPLICATION: Redeemer has submitted a grant application to Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, for money to help us start on finishing the 2nd floor of our new addition. Please pray that we are approved. More details will be coming.

MARCH NEWSLETTER DEADLINE: Tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 20! Articles received after that will not be published.
O.F.F. POTLUCK WEDNESDAY: The monthly 3rd Wednesday potluck lunch for the Over Fifty Folk will take place here tomorrow at 12 noon. Please bring some food to share and join us for this relaxing time together.

FOOD DRIVE ENDS MARCH 2: Please continue to bring food items for the poor and hungry to church. Our goal is 700 lbs., and all of it will go to Marion Polk Food Share for distribution to needy families and individuals in our area. Check out the poster of the “10 Most Wanted Foods” for ideas of what to share.
