'Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.'  St Luke 4.21

We know from experience that we can continue to put things off indefinitely.  But there comes a time when we know that gut feeling that says loud and clearly, "Today."

Jesus knew that when he read a 750 year old prophecy from the book of Isaiah to the people of his hometown Nazareth during synagog worship. He then looked them squarely in the eyes and spoke the words above.

Today.  Today, Jesus said, my real life work begins: Bringing good news to the poor.  Sight to the blind.  Freedom to the oppressed.  God's grace to all.  And that is what he did, all the way up to and including his death.

Some day we will run out of tomorrows, and we will face death knowing we never did fulfill what we felt to be the mission that God was calling us to.  Today.  What stirs in your heart that says to you, "Today, now, I will begin the real work to which God's Spirit is calling me."?

HAITI RESPONSE:  We took in $507 at our door offering last Sunday.  These gifts of yours will be sent to Lutheran World Relief for emergency work among the stricken people of Haiti.  If you have not yet donated, you will have another opportunity to do so this coming Sunday.  Checks may be made out to Redeemer Lutheran Church, and we will send in one large congregational gift.  If you wish to donate earlier, please visit Lutheran World Relief's web site for options and information.

ANNUAL MEETING AND LUNCH will take place this Sunday, Jan 24, immediately after worship.  The purpose of this lunch and meeting is to share information and ideas for ministry here at Redeemer, as well as to conduct necessary business.  A printed Annual Report with submissions from all our officers, boards, and task forces will be handed out.  The lunch is free, and you do not need to bring anything.  We should be finished by about 1pm or so.

REDEEMER COMMUNICATION HUB is our office.  Please be sure to include Sandy and Anita, our secretaries, in all of your date setting and minutes, so that this information can be properly shared with the congregation in a timely and accurate way.

SOUPER BOWL:  On the Sunday of the football Super Bowl, Feb. 7, our Social Ministry Board will provide opportunities for you to contribute to several local charities and their 'soup' ministries to the poor and homeless.

CHURCH CAMPOUT:
Please see the bulletin for vital information about the changes in this year's campout, scheduled for August 21 - 22 near Lincoln City.

FOOD WAGON / BARREL:  What a joy to see each week's wagon load of food donations wheeled to the altar for a Sunday blessing!  Your thankful and generous hearts result in these gifts of food to the poor through Marion Polk Food Share, our partner agency.  Our goal each week: 50 pounds.

REDEEMER COMMUNITY GARDEN:  With the unanimous approval of our congregation, the Garden Committee will proceed with developing our new community garden here on our campus.  If interested in helping, please contact Jan Shearer.  Next meeting is Thursday, Jan 28, at 3:30pm in the Library.

O.C.D.C. stands for Oregon Child Development Coalition.  Beginning this month, OCDC will establish a center on our campus in the building formerly used by Concordia School.  They have signed a lease with us for two years.  OCDC ministers to migrant families, especially the children.  We look forward to partnering with them in reaching the immigrant people of our community with much needed services.

GUEST PREACHER ON FEBRUARY 7: Rev. Ed Brandt will be our special guest on Sunday, February 7. Rev. Brandt will lead our adult Bible study that morning and also preach at worship.  Rev. Brandt has extensive experience working with immigrants over the 37 years of his ministry in the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. After graduating from Concordia Seminary, St Louis, in 1973, he spent three years as a missionary to Venezuela, where he became fluent in Spanish. He has also served as Director of Latino Ministries in the Yakima Valley, Washington. Since moving to Dallas, Oregon, many years ago, he has served as a bi-lingual instructor in Salem public schools and has also worked with a number of ministry organizations focusing on Hispanic immigrants.

Rev. Brandt will help us understand the Latino culture better, enabling us to serve the large Latino population in NE Salem as we strive to reach out to our neighbors in Christian love and service.

NEW SUNDAY MORNING ADULT CLASS COMING:  How familiar are you with the world's second largest and fastest-growing religion?  Many in the West know little about the faith and practice of Islam, and are familiar only with the actions of a minority of radical extremists.  Pastor Joel will lead this video and discussion based course which will help you understand Islam's role as both a religion and a way of life, and its deep impact on world affairs both historically and today.  This new class begins on Sunday, February 14 and will run 12 weeks up to Pentecost Sunday on May 23.
