Pastor Joel's midweek reminders for Jume 1, 2010
This entry was posted on 6/1/2010 8:10 PM and is filed under Mid-Week Reminders.
'...the fish
of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the sea.' Psalm 8.8
This
verse from our Psalm for this past Sunday takes on a dimension of great
urgency as the BP oil well deep beneath the Gulf continues to spew
millions of gallons of oil into the sea. All the oceans on our planet
are interconnected, and scientists and oceanographers are now doing the
grim work of trying to calculate how all this oil will be carried by
currents into places far beyond the source of the gusher. This immense
and unparalleled environmental catastrophe now appears to be the
result--once again--of willful human carelessness.
Our massive dependence on oil and oil products pervades our daily
lives. For example, here are a few things we use every day that
require oil stocks to provide the petroleum used in their production:
dishwashing liquid, phones, antiseptics, ink, tires, clothing,
refrigerator linings, paint rollers, glue, trash bags, hand lotion,
contact lenses, shampoo, disposable diapers, eyeglasses, vitamin
capsules, credit cards, water pipes, toilet seats, balloons, shower
curtains, detergents, nail polish, false teeth, toothpaste, luggage,
ballpoint pens, lipstick, hearing aids, shaving cream,
carpeting..............and the list goes on and on.
Where will all this uncontrolled oil spillage end up? What will be the
impact on 'the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the
sea'? God has given humanity stewardship of this earth's resources and
all the life forms on this planet. With dominion comes great
responsibility. Let us hope and pray that this great oil disaster
leads all of us--oil conglomerates like BP, those in government
regulatory and oversight roles, and each one of us--to consider again,
with humility and repentance, our stewardship of earth. The earth is
not ours to do with as we please. As Christians, we know this to be
true: "The earth is the Lord's, and all that is in it, the world, and
those who live in it; for he has founded it on the seas." (Psalm
24.1) This is the beginning of wisdom when it comes to stewardship of
creation.
PLEASE REMEMBER
that our custom here at Redeemer when worship is over is
to honor all
those with mobility challenges to leave the sanctuary first with their
canes and walkers and wheelchairs. If you must leave in a hurry, then
please use the side aisles to exit, so that we leave the main aisle
open for those with walking impairments.
Thanks for remembering!
PASTOR'S SUNDAY ADULT CLASS:
During the summer months, Pastor will lead a study and
discussion of the
assigned Bible readings for Sunday worship. Because our regular
meeting area in the Commons Room is now sealed off due to the car crash
May 5, we will use the Holy Footprints room, just down the hallway from
the Library. Coffee is available near the kitchen. Join us for a
lively discussion and time of fellowship and learning!
VACATION
BIBLE
SCHOOL CANCELLED: Because of the damage to the
north end of our building, and the restoration work that will take
place this Summer, the Council has decided that for several good
reasons we will have to cancel VBS this year, scheduled for June
21-25. The safety of the children is most important.
SOUP KITCHEN
SERVING OPPORTUNITY:
Redeemer is scheduled to serve soup to the
homeless on Sunday, June 6, from 1 - 3pm.
The soup kitchen is in St Mark Lutheran Church, near the capitol
building. This is a wonderful opportunity to serve the homeless of our
community. Please talk with Lorene Bartell or Etta Mae Hitchcock for
details.
SANCTUARY SOUND SYSTEM:
What a difference in sound / hearing quality this past Sunday! We are
indebted to Keith Palmer and his helpers for providing expertise and
time in solving this chronic problem. One elderly man even said to me
as he greeted me after worship, 'Now I won't have to buy hearing aids
just to hear on Sundays!'
