Pastor Joel's Mid-Week Reminders for 5/31/2011
This entry was posted on 6/1/2011 6:49 AM and is filed under Mid-Week Reminders.
"You will
be
my witnesses...to the ends of the earth." Acts 1.8
Jesus'
words to the disciples just before he ascended back into
heaven still
ring true for his followers today, 2,000 years later. St
Luke, author
of the book of Acts, places these words of Jesus in the very
first
chapter, and then in the next 27 chapters develops the story
of how the
early Christians took the message of God's love in Christ to
the ends
of the Roman Empire.
Some fascinating statistics prove the case: in the book of
Acts, St
Luke mentions 95 different persons from 32 countries, 54
cities, and 9
Mediterranean islands. In just 30 years, the power of the
Christian
message penetrated almost all of the land areas touching the
Mediterranean Sea.
Today, the mission field may not primarily be half way
around the
world, but rather in our own back yard--the immediate
community. And
perhaps even your own immediate family. "You will be my
witnesses."
It's still true today and always will be.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
REGARDING CONGREGATIONAL
EMAILS: We are limited by our web server
to a certain
number of emails that can be sent in any given week from the
church
office. That may be one reason that some of you are not
receiving the
Spirit Call newsletter via email. We may need to restrict the
number
of prayer requests that are sent out each week due to this
limitation
imposed on us. We will do our best to accommodate your
requests, but
may need either to bunch them or delay them. Thanks for your
understanding.
VOLUNTEER
LABOR NEEDED UPSTAIRS: There is still
work to be done upstairs. If you can help, please talk with
Al
Binder, Randy
Giesbers, Eric Westerfield, or others on our Properties
Board. You
don't have to be skilled--much of the work can be learned and
mastered
quickly. Our thanks to all who have put in many hours of
volunteer
labor helping
to complete these projects!!
PASTOR JOEL'S
ADULT
SUNDAY CLASS: I'm currently leading a
Bible study that
focuses on the assigned texts for each
Sunday of Easter. Together we discuss the riches of our new
life in
Christ as we grow in our understanding of what the
Resurrection
means and how we can live in such a way
that we witness the joy and hope of being Easter Christians.
Join us
in the Commons Room each Sunday from 9:50 - 10:45am. Coffee
and
refreshments are available.
NOTICE FROM OUR
NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE:
"The nominating committee has been hard at work over
the past
several
months
identifying potential candidates for the 5 officer positions
(President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and
Financial
Secretary) in preparation for our June congregational election
meeting. If you are interested in the possibility of serving
in one of
these capacities, and we have not yet spoken with you, PLEASE
contact a
member of the nominating committee as soon as possible: Paul
Schutz, Al
Binder, Pam King, Diane Brauer, Jim Baker, Pastor Joel. We do
not want
to leave anyone out, and since both men and women are eligible
to serve
in any of these positions, all are welcome! We look forward
to hearing
from you."
