Pastor Joel's Mid-Week Reminders for 6/8/2011
This entry was posted on 6/9/2011 5:58 AM and is filed under Mid-Week Reminders.
'At this
sound the crowd gathered, and was bewildered, because each
one heard
them [the apostles] speaking in the native language of
each.' Acts 2.6
This
coming Sunday, June 12, is Pentecost Sunday. (Wear
something red to
celebrate!!) As Acts tells us about that eventful day when
the Holy
Spirit was poured out upon the early Christians. They began
to speak
in all sorts of other national languages. Today, the
Christian church
has spread all over the world and is found in almost every
nation,
where the good news of God's love in Christ Jesus is
proclaimed in the
native languages of those countries.
And today, as never before, the Church is also challenged to
learn the
'language' of the culture we live in. That cultural
language may be
the most difficult language for us to learn. But it points
out what
Jesus told his followers before his death and resurrection:
that we
live IN the world, though we may not be OF the world. If we
are to be
heard and understood, we must speak the language that people
will
recognize.
No matter where we live, the language of loving deeds and
acts of
kindness and compassion and justice will be understood by
hurting,
oppressed, suffering people. And the Holy Spirit will give
wings to
our actions and our words.
CONGREGATIONAL
MEETING,
JUNE 26 AFTER WORSHIP: We urge you to
attend this important meeting, during which we will be
electing an
entirely new slate of congregational officers, and also
discussing and
adopting our Mission and Ministry Plan for fiscal year 20111 -
2012
(also known as the budget). Please plan on being present!!
IMPORTANT
INFORMATION
REGARDING CONGREGATIONAL
EMAILS: We are limited by our web server
to a certain
number of emails that can be sent in any given week from the
church
office. That may be one reason that some of you are not
receiving the
Spirit Call newsletter via email. We may need to restrict the
number
of prayer requests that are sent out each week due to this
limitation
imposed on us. We will do our best to accommodate your
requests, but
may need either to bunch them or delay them. Thanks for your
understanding.
VOLUNTEER
LABOR NEEDED UPSTAIRS: There is still
work to be done upstairs. If you can help, please talk with
Al
Binder, Randy
Giesbers, Eric Westerfield, or others on our Properties
Board. You
don't have to be skilled--much of the work can be learned and
mastered
quickly. Our thanks to all who have put in many hours of
volunteer
labor helping
to complete these projects!!
PASTOR JOEL'S
ADULT
SUNDAY CLASS: I'm currently leading a
Bible study that
focuses on the assigned texts for each
Sunday. Together we discuss the riches of our new life in
Christ as we grow in our understanding of how we can live in
such a way
that we witness the joy and hope of being Easter Christians.
Join us
in the Commons Room each Sunday from 9:50 - 10:45am. Coffee
and
refreshments are available.
NOTICE FROM OUR
NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE:
"The nominating committee has been hard at work over
the past
several
months
identifying potential candidates for the 5 officer positions
(President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and
Financial
Secretary) in preparation for our June congregational election
meeting. If you are interested in the possibility of serving
in one of
these capacities, and we have not yet spoken with you, PLEASE
contact a
member of the nominating committee as soon as possible: Paul
Schutz, Al
Binder, Pam King, Diane Brauer, Jim Baker, Pastor Joel. We do
not want
to leave anyone out, and since both men and women are eligible
to serve
in any of these positions, all are welcome! We look forward
to hearing
from you."
FRIDAY
MORNING BIBLE STUDY
CLASS has decided
to wait until
September to re-convene.
