'Nathanael
asked
Jesus, “Where did you get to know me?”' St John 1.48
How
well does anyone know you? Marriage is the most intimate of
relationships. Yet even after many years of marriage,
spouses don't
ever fully know their partners. Friends are important
throughout
life, but we never completely disclose ourselves to them.
Many
people today are engaged in the age-old quest of discovering
themselves. Youth in particular come to mind, but even
throughout
life into old age we continue to come to realizations about
ourselves
as we change and develop and grow.
Our
Psalm for this coming Sunday reminds us of Him who knows us
more
fully than we can ever know ourselves. Listen again to this
marvelous self-reflection and quiet trust from the Psalmist:
“O
Lord, you have searched me and known me. You discern my
thoughts from
far away. You search out my path...and are acquainted with
all my
ways. ...If I take the wings of the morning and settle at
the
farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead
me, and
your right hand shall hold me fast.”
And
St Paul echoes this wondrous sentiment when he says in his
great
chapter on love, 1 Corinthians 13: “Now I know only in
part; then I
will know fully, even
as I have been fully known.”
God knows us. And God
loves
us. Take comfort in that and entrust your whole life into
his hands.
